The Peacock
Ian Jones, Food and Drink EditorCombining the two great elements of beer and curry, The Peacock Bar on Bradford’s North Parade stands out as a food and drink destination. And it’s not just any old beer and curry: expect authentic Indian street food paired with booze for the connoisseur. You’ll note the Kingfisher branded banners on the outside seating area.
There’s a healthy spread of chicken and lamb kebabs, marinaded in yoghurt and spices, as well as chicken wings and lamb chops. Then there are chicken livers, and a breakfast samosa (meat and veg in a pastry case). Mushroom and paneer versions of all these are available, and any of the dishes can be turned into a wrap on request. These are generous portions served with lime and salad plus spicy dips, designed to go nicely with a few steady drinks.

In classic Oriental style, botanical gins are prominent on the drink menu. Old Raj, Elephant Gin, Opihr and Tanqueray all offer an opportunity to quench your thirst in elegance. Rums include the entire Bacardi family, Black Magic, and Koko Kanu, and for the whiskey drinker, there’s the full range of Johnnie Walker, Gentleman Jack’s, and plus Amrut and Bulleit. Asian bottled beers on offer include Lucky Buddha, Tusker, and True Maharaja. Kingfisher, the classic smooth Indian lager par excellence, is on tap. There are also guest local beers, such as Northern Monk Chennai, and Everard’s Tiger Best Bitter.
You’ll find traditional live music and pub quizzes too. The Peacock’s atmosphere is designed to be stylish and classy but laid-back at the same time, with comfortable chairs and wooden furniture.
Nearby on the North Parade – voted one of Britain’s best town high streets – you’ll find other stylish boozers, including the Record Café and The Sparrow. It’s a five-minute walk to Bradford Foster Square Station.
