The Gallery at 164
Alice HileyThe Gallery at 164 is an independent gallery in Leeds City Centre, situated in the thriving cultural quarter at Quarry Hill. Since opening in 2011, the vibrant gallery has exhibited an eclectic mix of styles and media from both established and emerging talents; exhibitions range from photography to illustration, painting, printmaking and sculpture.
Originally a traditional ‘white box’ gallery, The Gallery at 164 has adapted to meet the needs of its visitors and to be more in keeping with its focus on high-quality hospitality; the artwork on show is now more interactive, immersive and inclusive.
The Gallery at 164 works closely with artists, universities and other arts organisations across the city and beyond to create interesting shows which brighten the walls of the beloved Munro House building. Since opening the gallery has curated and organised over 100 exhibitions, all of which can be viewed online on the gallery’s archive; exhibitions are scheduled on a roughly four-week rolling turnaround, to guarantee something fresh to enjoy with each visit.
The Gallery at 164 is accompanied by Cafe 164, a bakery and coffee house known for its fresh produce, stylish design and buzzing atmosphere. Ever since its inception in 1994, Cafe 164 has been known for offering some of the best sandwiches in Leeds.
The Gallery at 164 and its adjoining café host a wide-ranging programme of music and arts events, and the space is also available to hire for functions, wedding receptions, workshops, screenings and private exhibitions. Every penny spent on food, drink and event tickets at the gallery and café goes towards continuing an exciting and ambitious programme, and supporting Leeds’s incredible network of artists, innovators and creatives.
With a focus that is both local and national, the gallery’s aim is to support local arts and culture while also bringing artists and their work to the city from further afield.
