Substation

Substation

Where to start with Substation? Put it this way, there aren’t many venues that combine a state of the art climbing wall with a yoga studio and a vegetarian and vegan bar-slash-kitchen, all whilst moonlighting as one of Macclesfield’s most interesting events spaces on Saturday nights. Somehow Substation manages all of that and more.

Located just outside of the town centre, this unique combination of fitness, health and social space has proved a holistic hit. On the climbing side, Substation offers over 700 square metres of climbing wall, with over 200 routes, coaching, child and beginner options and accompanying gym equipment. They also host kids parties and provide corporate/private hire, as well as clubs and groups to get involved in.

The yoga offering is equally sophisticated, with a selection of yogis providing different classes to suit your needs. Substation’s yoga space is custom built with the latest hot yoga technology, specially designed lighting and acoustics and range of options to suit beginners, through to advanced practitioners, including tailored pregnancy and baby yoga classes.

The bar and kitchen provides a social space to relax and refuel after your exertions — but many people travel just for the food. On the menu you can find the likes of a chipotle Black bean burrito sitting alongside the bhaji burger, falafels and cauliflower bites. There are also pizzas, sweet treats, hot drinks and alcoholic beverages depending upon your mood.

As mentioned, Substation works overtime as an events space each Saturday night. Having decided that it was a waste to close their doors, the venue transforms into a buzzing hive of activity, hosting everything from vegan tapas to mezze nights and performances from local musicians. You’ll want to check the listings in advance, but it’s fair to say that things don’t get boring at Substation.
