Skipton Little Theatre
Carmel Smickersgill, Tours & Activities EditorSkipton Little Theatre is a brilliant example of culture being created for the community, by the community. With a season of five shows as well as the occasional extra one off performance, this intimate 72 seater venue provides a cosy theatrical experience with passion at the heart of every show. It is also the home of the Skipton Players, a thespian group that have been resident in the theatre since the 1960’s.
Although the theatre may be little, the scripts Skipton Players have taken on over the years are far from that. Previously they’ve performed seminal works by Moliere, Ibsen, T.S. Elliot and Charles Chilton to name but a few. It shows the power theatre can have, no matter the size, to bring big ideas from far away places to audiences anywhere in the world and for that audience to feel connected to distant ideas.
The theatre is a ‘not for profit’ group and relies on ticket sales, grants and the time of volunteers to make each show happen. Whether you’re interested in getting hands on with backstage and tech or looking for experience in arts funding, Skipton Players are keen to hear from you. If you’re a budding actor based in North Yorkshire, you can audition to be in one of their performances. Each show has a range of parts up for grabs; from leading roles to one liners, there is something for all levels of experience.
Outside of the main productions, Skipton Players hold regular read throughs of plays. These are opportunities to read through a script with like minded theatre enthusiasts, each part being read by an individual. It helps you appreciate the flow of a text and a sense of character that may not be as apparent when reading alone. Get in touch with the Skipton Players to find out when their next reading is.
