Sew Creative Studios
Carmel Smickersgill, Tours & Activities EditorLike a creative beacon amongst the tea rooms, eateries and takeaways of Stamford New Road, Altrincham, Sew Creative is a hive of imagination, fabric and pedagogy. Below the inspirational floral fabric creations on the wall, a row of machines are ready for action and are often the first machines new sewers use to learn the ropes.
Having worked in the fashion industry in London and New York after graduating from Manchester School of Art, Kate Proctor wanted to bring her love of sewing and design back up north, to share her passion with anyone willing to try. Sew creative first started as a single table in Hobby Craft and has since grown to inhabit it’s own studio space with an inhouse fabric shop. Kate along with a team of staff and volunteers, holds classes and workshops where you can learn to make specific items or free sew any project you’re keen to try out with a bit of guidance. The classes are available from six year olds upwards and make a point of being inclusive to all. If anything, Sew Creative are keen to break down some of the stereotypes around sewing and fashion design.
Alongside the sewing studio you’ll find a plentifully stocked fabric store. Each season, new fabrics appear following trends as well as providing weather appropriate materials to make with. It is advised that you go see the fabrics for yourself in person as there is often more in the shop than on the website.
Don’t be surprised if upon entering the studio, you hear the sound of little feet and a friendly bark. This would be Eric, one of the two in-house dogs at Sew Creative. Him and Dotty, the shy dog, can usually be found snoozing in their baskets, exploring the classes or looking for some attention and a cuddle.
