Salford Makers
Creative TouristSalford makers are a collective of artists, educators and people who make things happen based in Islington Mill in Salford. As well as running their own solo and collaborative creative practices they are ardently committed to providing a space where everyone and anyone can get involved with a creative project. Through their wide range of expertise and the workshop space they run in islington mill you can find a diverse collection of courses and workshops for you to develop skills in ceramics, jewellery making, textiles and more.
It’s impossible to separate Salford Makers from Islington Mill itself. This hub of artists studios, venues, now a cafe and a bar is a beacon of Northwest creativity and is home to many big names in music, visual art and drag. It’s also home to many community focused groups and a vital space for support groups, organisations and as a mutual meeting space. To top off this hive of good vibes, on the ground floor of the main mill building you’ll find a well curated club space where many a fun night has been had.
The Mill is currently expanding the buildings it occupies and branching out to the neighbouring warehouses. It’s great to see the evolution of a space and something which is being developed not just into endless glass towers of small flats.
Some of the artists currently running workshops in the space are jeweller Wonderhaus, distinctive textile artist Sally Gilford and eco focused natural print maker Talie Linseed. They’re kept in good company by ceramicists 7 Spot Pottery. Whether you’re looking to take up a several week long course to hone a skill or you’re just feel the desire to spend and afternoon doing something different and creative, Salford Makers is a great places to learn from experts as well as supporting local artists. The collective’s founder Sally Gilford describes it as “encouraging the development of new skills and skills sharing through making to support wellness and positivity”.
