QUARRY
Maja Lorkowska, Exhibitions EditorWander down the Ten Streets area of Liverpool and you may think it’s just a quiet industrial part of town, with some interesting architecture like the disused railway arches on Love Lane, where not very much happens. Look a little closer though and you’ll find gems like the QUARRY – a music venue, recording studio and multimedia arts space.
Cosy and atmospheric, QUARRY has the air of a (small) Berlin nightclub. Exposed bricks and red-pink lights make it seem friendly as soon as you walk in and you just know this is not a mainstream venue, not only because of it’s out-of-the-way location. It’s home to a regular burlesque, drag and disco night, as well as some fundraising events in the form of parties. You’ll find local musicians, pub quizzes, spoken word and more.
QUARRY’s ethos is clear: to provide a space for musical diversity in the city, addressing the lack caused by the closure of some grassroots venues since 2010. Operating since February 2020, QUARRY is a DIY project that takes both the music scene and their commitment to the local community very seriously. As well as hosting events, the team provide hands-on experience and mentorship for personal growth for the artists of Merseyside. Their programme isn’t limited to music either – while gigs fill most of the programme, the venue is open to other creative fields as well, such as film showings or exhibitions.
QUARRY even offer a multi-tier membership that offers benefits such as tickets to gigs and merchandise but, perhaps most importantly, it allows the members to support a community music venue that works very hard to encourage creativity and boost the local scene.
