Little Black Pug
Georgina PellantThis adorably-named boozer is one of Blackpool’s newer additions. A laid-back, family-friendly pub with a huge malt whiskey collection, it first opened on Talbot Road in August 2017 next to the impressive Augustus Pugin-designed Sacred Heart church and has been a hit with locals and tourists alike since.
As you might have guessed from the name, it’s dog friendly too – and, if you’re lucky, you might even get to meet Ethel, the original little black pug herself, on your visit. A great watering hole for pug lovers and non pug lovers alike, its interiors mix the old and the new thanks to a modern makeover to the old Catholic schoolhouse building which it calls home.
The exterior dates back to 1888 and is an impressive example of the period with its impressive stone frontage. Inside, the building’s historic character is still retained with dramatic original coving, exposed beams, original wooden floorboards and beautiful arched ceilings.
The pub is known for its large spirits collection, boasting more than 200 bottles of malt whiskey as well as over 100 gins and vodkas – including a bubblegum pug gin, of all wonderful things. You’ll also find a selection of beers and wines on its bar, including the ever-popular Timothy Taylor Landlord cask. It also specialises in free live entertainment which runs every weekend, welcoming a roster of singers, DJs and musicians spanning everything from Motown and 80s nights to 10-piece brass bands.
The boozer is most famous for its riotous Northern Soul weekenders, which are held several times a year and attract visitors from all across the UK, but on any given weekend you’ll also find regular disco parties, tribute band performances and much more. All events hosted at The Little Black Pug are free with the exception of its charity events, which are held several times a year to raise funds for local causes.
The pub doesn’t have a kitchen but does permit outside food to be brought in if you’re hankering for a snack (for some top tips check out our guide to Fish and Chips in Blackpool). It also has a suntrap beer garden to soak up the sun in warmer months, and a quirky little function room set in the old chapel roof.
Located in Blackpool town centre close to a range of different attractions, the freehouse is closed throughout the week and open Friday to Sunday until late (2am Fri & Sat, 12am Sunday).
