Hyde Park Picture House in Leeds isn’t your average cinema. Opened in 1914, it’s one of the oldest cinemas in the UK and somehow still manages to feel completely alive today. The Edwardian building has kept its classic charm, from the ornate balcony to the beautifully tiled façade, and yes, it even has its original gas lighting, though don’t worry, it’s all switched off these days.

After a big three-year redevelopment, the cinema reopened in 2023 with some brilliant upgrades. There’s a brand-new 52-seat second screen in the basement, improved accessibility, and a modern extension that houses a café bar and community room. It’s the perfect mix of old-school charm and modern comfort.

Step inside the main screen and you’ll be greeted by cosy red velvet seats beneath a classic barrel-vaulted ceiling. The second screen downstairs is smaller and more intimate, ideal for catching indie films, foreign-language features, or a hidden gem that’s not on the mainstream radar.

Hyde Park’s programming often includes independent films, documentaries, family-friendly flicks, and foreign-language cinema. They also run Q&As with filmmakers, panel discussions, and workshops, so it’s just as much about the experience as it is about the movies.

Whether you’re a Leeds local or just passing through, Hyde Park Picture House offers a cinematic experience you won’t forget. Classic, quirky, and full of character, it’s a little slice of film magic right in the city.
