Future Yard

Maja Lorkowska, Exhibitions Editor
A 350-capacity space, permanent live music venue at 75 Argyle Street. This community venue will bring some of today’s most exciting new national and international artists to Wirral, while at the same time providing key early performance opportunities for emerging local musicians.
Courtesty of Future Yard

A few years ago, it would have been hard to believe that one of the leading Merseyside music venues is located in Birkenhead, a town in the Wirral that time seemed to forget. Today though, Future Yard is at least in part responsible for the place’s regeneration and becoming something of a destination for local artists. The 280-capacity space on Argyle Street look like a big black and pink block on a fairly ordinary street. Inside though, you’ll find a café and bar, and an impressively equipped performance space, providing a stage for some of today’s most exciting new national and international artists.

It’s not all about big names though, as Future Yard are passionate about providing opportunities for the community, music-loving enthusiasts and emerging local musicians. There are regular programmes and events, including the free access Propeller artist membership, aiming to provide advice, inspiration and answer questions that aspiring artists may have. There are open mic nights, a regular kids party called Mosh Tots for “grown-ups and Mini Moshers” and a studio available for hire.

Check out their listings to find out what’s coming up, but the gig programme is varied, from classical music with a twist to local rock bands. After the gig, you can grab a pizza in the Future Yard Kitchen.

This venue has it all, from the right equipment to the right attitude so if you need an excuse to come to the Wirral, book some tickets and come along to see how music can change the culture and energy of a place.
