Further North
Georgina Pellant
Further North is kind of like your front room, but with better beers and no television. Serving a mixture of real and local ales, it is part of Leeds-based brewery North Brewing Co and little sister to the legendary North Bar on New Briggate in the city centre. Split across two floors, it’s cosy and conversation-focused with a mix of real and local ales to choose from. For non-beer drinkers, there’s also a good selection of wines and cocktails to choose from.
One of the first microbars to open in Leeds, this neighbourhood bar is a long-standing favourite amongst beer lovers in Chapel Allerton. On the taps you’ll find the team pouring their own beers and ales as well as a carefully-selected international offering, showcasing a range of different cask ales, continental draught beers and quality bottled and canned world beers. Naturally, you’ll find plenty of North’s own core range beers on offer here as well as some funky specials.
Fitted out with hodge-podge, mix-and-match furniture, there’s a real homely feel to the bar with odd tables and chairs scattered about the place and a squishy leather sofa upstairs that’s always in high demand. Wooden floorboards, and deep royal blue walls add to that home-from-home feel that makes it so beloved by its locals.
The bar also offers takeaway bottles and cans, including a selection of cider, perfect for sunny days when you fancy sitting out in the park or for enjoying at home on the sofa with a good film. This first started during the Covid lockdowns, when Further North converted itself into a North Brewing Co bottle shop. Restrictions have since been lifted, but the takeaway service remains incredibly popular.
It’s not all about the beer, though. As well as sourcing great beers, the team here also pride themselves on offering a carefully selected list of ciders, wines and spirits, alongside bespoke coffee, organic and herbal teas and more. As for food, you’ll find a short bar menu of snacks, cheese and charcuterie boards, all made using homemade bread from the neighbouring Sunshine Bakery. On Sundays, guests can also get involved with Sunshine Bakery’s Burger Club – all they need to do is order at the bar and Further North do the rest.
Further North is a very popular choice on the weekends and gets busy quickly on warm, sunny days thanks to its floor to ceiling glass doors that can be opened out during good weather. A fixture on Harrogate Road since 2007, it’s easy to feel like you’re sitting on laps here when the bar gets busy.
For Chapel Allerton beer lovers that’s all part of the charm, but if you don’t fancy feeling squeezed in like a sardine you’re best visiting during the week for a more leisurely pint, a few bar snacks and a spot of people watching. It’s worth noting that Further North is a card only bar, and does not accept cash.
