Indoor markets are hip again and Chester Market has gone from strength to strength to become a shopping and foodie destination that rivals anything you’ll find in Liverpool or Manchester.

If you think you know Chester Indoor Market, think again. Winner of Best Small Indoor Market at the 2020 Great British Market Awards, this place is a one-stop shop where you can pick up anything and everything; jewellery, vinyl, books and plants, as well as top-quality fruit and veg, meat, cheese, fish and bakery goods that will set you up for the week.

The biggest draw though has to be the food court with street eats from around the world. There’s an Italian pizzeria, Thai noodles, tacos and Caribbean. There’s also a bottle shop and taproom. There’s a brilliant atmosphere at the weekend and the market is open until 10pm on ‘Foodie Friday’ and ‘Saturday Social’, with live music, DJs and most importantly, loads of delicious things to eat and drink.

Death By Tacos is a local favourite, the place to sample Mexican street food and discuss the difference between mezcal and tequila, in between shots of both. The tacos are as authentic as they come and ingredients are made fresh every day, including hand-pressed tortillas. If things get a little too hot, hot, hot, then a chilled Pacifico beer or cheeky Margarita will cool you down. Everything here is excellent, right down to the guac and roll playlist.

Another popular vendor is Exotic Booze Club, a fun and friendly bar that takes life with a pinch of salt and a slice of lemon. These guys are serious about booze and they stock some interesting locally-distilled products, as well as providing a tipple tasting room.

Chester Market is the best place to shop, eat and drink in the city. Don’t forget to bring a bag or two; you won’t be leaving here empty-handed.
