Bridewell Studios
Maja Lorkowska, Exhibitions EditorBridewell Studios is a gallery space and studios with a long history. Located a little out of the way on Prescot Street towards North Liverpool, Bridewell began in 1976 after renting a derelict police station. The Grade II listed building was constructed around 1846 and to this day you can see remnants of its previous life: a “Detective Office” sign at the foot of the staircase and the row of holding cells add to the very particular ambiance of the site.
Bridewell is home to artists from all disciplines and the gallery space holds regular exhibitions for both residents of the studios and artists who work in other spaces but are local to Liverpool. The studios are occupied by painters, sculptors, digital and textile artists, jewellery makers and art restorers. It’s this eclectic mix of creatives that ensures Bridewell is a collaborative network for its residents.
It may be a little out of the way but you’ll want to make a special trip for Bridewell – keep an eye on their social media for updates on upcoming exhibitions. You’ll see the large red brick building is situated on the corner of the street, opposite the old Royal Liverpool University Hospital buildings. There are quiet food spots nearby and you won’t be too far from the city centre options either.
