Belzan
Maja Lorkowska, Exhibitions EditorIt’s safe to say Belzan is, by now, a local legend, as well as being mentioned in the Michelin Guide. South-Liverpool locals rave about it (and tell their friends from further afield and so it continues) but there’s a loyal clientele coming back again and again.
The Belzan bistro serves seasonal plates of goodness, with fresh ingredients and a lot to offer to any vegetarian customers. Unlike most higher-end places (think big plates, small food although here there is no shortage of food on the plate), Belzan’s vegetable dishes are not a footnote at the end of the menu, but in some cases, the star of the show. Barbecued sprouts and cabbage in satay sauce are just a couple of the highlights. There are meat and fishes dishes too, of course – steamed trout and braised ox cheek all make an appearance, at least until the next time the menu changes.
You’ll find Belzan on the busy Smithdown Road, in a small and somewhat unassuming location, which in recent years has gained some independent businesses worth checking out, such as Kelly’s Dispensary, for drinks and Dead Ink Books for a browse of their shelves. The location just adds to the relaxed atmosphere of the bistro, without taking anything away from the experience of excellent food and friendly staff.
