Aunty Social
Sarah Catherine JonesSupporting artists, designers and makers, Aunty Social is a mecca for Blackpool’s creatives.
Based in their newly renovated premises on Topping Street, this dedicated art space allows people to develop their creativity, learn new skills and connect with others through positive arts and crafts. And with 25 makers and artists and counting in the Blackpool and Fylde Coast area, it’s fast becoming something of a community hub.
This volunteer-led initiative comes from humble beginnings. What started out as a group of friends looking for fun, affordable things to do in Blackpool (that didn’t involve pubs or bars) has snowballed into a fully-fledged arts organisation.
Aunty Social offers a diverse programme of activities. With a focus on creating a safe and supportive space, you can get involved in everything from Queer Craft Clubs to games nights and socials. Keep an eye out for their coveted film evenings, which always prove popular.
The venue itself has a fair few different creative spaces. The main workshop plays host to creative groups and talks, and is suitable for both community and corporate meetings. There’s even a community darkroom for local photographers, as well as space for hot-desking. You can also take some time to relax in the reading area, which has a whole range of volumes on art and social justice.
The jewel in Aunty Social’s crown is the on-site lifestyle store, which takes shopping local to a whole new level. Celebrating the talents of independent makers, there are plenty of thoughtfully made goods to get your hands on. Look out for original homeware items, as well as clothes and accessories.
Whether you’re a beginner wanting to learn new skills or a more experienced artist looking to develop your work, Aunty Social is the perfect place to hone your creative talents.
