Alhambra Cinema
Katie HaleAn independent cinema in the heart of town, the Lonsdale Alhambra is, for many locals, a treasure of Penrith.
Until a few years ago, you would have sat in creaking moth-eaten seats, watching screens flanked by dusty dried flower displays which, local urban legend has it, had been there since the Second World War.
Thankfully, the cinema has now been updated, with new comfortable seating, Dolby Digital Projection and Sound, and a distinct lack of dried flower displays. In the past few years, a third screen has been added, seating just 36 people and specialising in more niche film choices.
The three screens and wide range of film choices make Penrith’s Alhambra Cinema the perfect place to unwind on a rainy day – which, let’s face it, are not all that uncommon in Cumbria. Choose from the latest blockbuster releases, or live-streamed theatre and concerts from across the world.
Here, in this historic market town, you can see performances from London’s National Theatre and Covent Garden Opera House, from the Royal Shakespeare Company, from the Berliner Philharmoniker, and from the New York Metropolitan Opera.
The cinema also runs a regular Sunday programme of independent and foreign language films.
Reasonably priced in comparison to chain-owned multiplexes, the Lonsdale Alhambra also has the advantage of feeling more personal. Not sure what to see, or whether a film is suitable for a particular age group? The staff at the ticket desk are always more than happy to help you decide, and to make recommendations.
Booking is online or in-person at the desk. And, if you’re visiting a few times, you can ask about the loyalty card scheme, which rewards regular cinema-goers with upgrades on drinks and popcorn, and with free tickets.
