Cinema in the North

Tom Grieve, Cinema Editor

This month we’re looking forward to heading to HOME to enjoy some vintage Alfred Hitchcock thrillers. There’s eight films from the Master of Suspense, ranging from the big Hollywood titles to some of his early British hits all scheduled to coincide with the venue’s new stage adaptation of North by Northwest. Big Hitchcock fans will also want to head to The Old Woolen where there’s a chance to see Blackmail with a live piano accompaniment.

We’ve also got our eye on a couple of upcoming film festivals that have released their line-ups recently. First, there’s Leeds Young Film Festival this April. Spread across venues all over the city, organisers have scheduled classic children’s films alongside brand new animation and VR experiences for the whole family to enjoy. GASP! Horror Film Festival isn’t quite so family-friendly, but they have announced details of a very exciting 2025 edition dedicated to championing diversity in genre cinema at Manchester’s Cultplex this June.

Also in Manchester this month, American Dreams and Nightmares is a season cinema at HOME arranged to mark the sad passing of cult film director David Lynch, while Instituto Cervantes host the first round of a new series of classic Spanish Cinema.
