Cinemas in Sheffield

Creative Tourist

The cinemas in Sheffield cater for all tastes with arthouse venues sitting happily alongside big multiplex screens. Whether you’re sold on the latest big-name blockbuster or looking for a classic screening, there’s a great variety of film offering in Sheffield.

Sheffield is home to the sprawling 20 screen Cineworld – one of only two IMAX with laser projection screens in the country. Additionally, the magnificent 1920 Abbeydale Picture House warrants a special mention too. With its barrell-vaulted ceiling – iconic and grand – it’s the only cinema of its era still going strong today.

There are also plenty of great films to be found in the newer venues too.  Look to Showroom Workstation for a selection of independent and arthouse releases alongside classic flicks, and The Light Cinema for a luxurious and plush cinema experience.

Alongside regularly scheduled programming across the city’s cinemas, film fans in Sheffield should look out for the internationally renowned Sheffield DocFest. Taking place every June, the festival is the UK’s largest documentary festival and features film screenings, exhibitions, talks and events.  Additionally, early cinema aficionados should definitely check out the Yorkshire Silent Film Festival –  delivering an unmissable annual festival of silent film alongside a year-round programme of events.
