Chorlton, Manchester

Creative Tourist

Chorlton is a left-leaning suburb a few miles south of Manchester’s city centre (and only 10-odd minutes away by tram).

A sprawling hive of artisan coffee shops, boutique clothing stores, parks, pubs, restaurants and bars, there’s an independent community spirit here, in an area well loved by young professionals and families.

And it’s loved for good reason. Chorlton has a lot going for it. It’s a tranquil spot, full of green spaces, but it’s also packed with things to do, from drinking, eating and shopping on the ever-trendy Beech Road to watching live music and performance at places like The Dulcimer and The Edge Theatre.

It’s also home to the annual (and excellent) Chorlton Arts Festival, the largest vegan supermarket in Greater Manchester (the country?), as well as an inordinate number of fashionable dogs.

Here are a few of our top tips for when you next find yourself in this south Manchester gem.

Our top picks

Barbakan Delicatessen

Barbakan Delicatessen, 67-71 Manchester Rd, Manchester, M21 9PW - Visit now

This award-winning, continental bakery is simply the place to go if you’re in need of some delicious, freshly baked carbs or posh bits and pieces for the pantry.

Mary & Archie Chorlton

Mary & Archie Chorlton, 111 Manchester Rd, Manchester, M21 9PG - Visit now

Mary & Archie Chorlton is the second, and let’s face it, best of the Mary & Archie bars — a great choice for craft beer, happy hour cocktails and a hearty brunch. It’s also a summer suntrap.

Chorlton Bookshop

Chorlton Bookshop, 506 Wilbraham Road, Manchester, M21 9AW - Visit now

Simply one of the best independent bookshops in Greater Manchester. We love this place. Go in, grab a book and head to one of the many nearby bars and start looking mysterious.

Kingbee Records

Kingbee Records, 519 Wilbraham Road, Chorlton, Manchester, M21 0UF - Visit now

Well into its third decade, Chorlton’s Kingbee is one of the Mancunian suburbs’ most recognisable and popular record shops, offering everything from early rock’n’roll to Northern Soul, prog-rock to punk.

97 Chorlton

97 Chorlton, 97 Beech Rd, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester , M21 9EQ - Visit now

97 is an upscale bar serving top-quality cocktails on Beech Road. The candlelit ambience and dark décor create an intimate, romantic evening vibe, with large mirrors enhancing the space.

Longford Park Disc Golf Course

Longford Park Disc Golf Course, Longford Park , Manchester, M21 9TA - Visit now

At Longford park, you’ll find an unusual but very fun outdoor activity: Disc Golf. This eighteen hole course is exactly what it says on the tin. A golf course that uses frisbee-like discs rather than balls.

The Edge Theatre and Arts Centre

The Edge Theatre and Arts Centre, Manchester Road, Chorlton, Manchester, Greater Manchester, M21 9JG - Visit now

Based in a 19th Century former Red Cross Hospital, The Edge is both a community-focussed theatre and a thriving charitable arts centre that does a lot of good all round.

The Edge Theatre and Arts in Chorlton

Unicorn Grocery

Unicorn Grocery, 89 Albany Rd, Manchester, M21 0BN - Visit now

An ever popular food cooperative that’s been in Chorlton for more than 20 years. They stock a wide-range of locally and ethically sourced organic, fruit, veg and fair trade products, all vegan.

The Drop Chorlton

The Drop Chorlton, 356 Barlow Moor Rd, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester , M21 8AZ - Visit now

There’s a case to be made for the city’s best Caribbean food coming from clandestine cafes next to industrial estates (shout-out to Sunrise Caribbean in Salford), but the rather-more-salubrious Drop matches up to these. The team has harnessed those amazing flavours and placed them into an appealing beach hut-style restaurant where you can kick back and drink cocktails for hours.

Henry C

Henry C, 107 Manchester Rd, Chorlton , M21 9GA - Visit now

Henry C has been serving up seriously good cocktails in its chic-yet-casual setting since 2016 (it’s also the elder sibling of 10 Tib Lane, one of the city centre’s most elegant and acclaimed restaurants). All three key elements are in place: a great-looking space, a team of friendly bar staff who seem to genuinely love what they do, and of course, incredible quality drinks.

Tea Hive

Tea Hive, 53 Manchester Rd, Manchester, M21 9PW - Visit now

With it’s mismatched furniture and crockery, Tea Hive isn’t short of character, and this is reflected on the menu, too.

The Beagle

The Beagle, 456-458 Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton, Manchester, Greater Manchester, M21 0BQ - Visit now

Excellent boozer and eatery in the southern suburbs. The venue has gone through many names and owners but The Beagle has finally stuck. Good beers and a great menu with some superb vegan options.

Sale Water Park and Chorlton Ees

Sale Water Park and Chorlton Ees, Rifle Road, Sale, M33 2LX

A nature reserve between Chorlton and Sale, perfect for summer strolls and getting yourself immersed in the great outdoors (without actually leaving the city).

The Font Chorlton

The Font Chorlton, 115-117 Manchester Rd, Manchester, M21 9PG - Visit now

The Font is a popular bar in Chorlton which serves up a great selection of beers and cocktails as well as an ever changing food menu. It can be a little bit like a creche on weekend afternoons, but once the parents clear off, it’s an ideal place to enjoy a beer or seven.
