Things to do in Blackpool

Creative Tourist

World famous for the IlluminationsBlackpool Tower and the Pleasure Beach, Blackpool has long been one of the country’s most iconic seaside resorts, its vast array of attractions pulling in over 20 million tourists in 2024 alone.

The town became synonymous with fun during the late 19th century thanks to its concentration of amusements, fortune tellers and oyster bars along the promenade’s ‘Golden Mile’. This reputation continued into the 20th century as holidaymakers, stars and even royalty flocked towards the glitz and glamour of the Winter Gardens, the Grand Theatre and Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

But what is Blackpool today? Is it, as some would winkingly suggest, Lancashire’s answer to Las Vegas? Or is there something more interesting bubbling among its arts, cultural and hospitality scenes – something untethered from Blackpool’s former glories, and well worth investigating in its own right?

As you might have already gathered, we’re with the latter camp, joining the participants of a recent in-depth survey of the UK who ranked Blackpool as the third best place to live, and the best seaside town overall.

Our recent visits to Blackpool have revealed a treasure trove of cultural happenings, which take nothing from the town’s attractions, but which bring something more dynamic and creative. Complimenting the historic yet future-facing Grundy Art Gallery and the not-for-profit Abington Studios, a vibrant community of local artists have developed creative hubs, with Aunty Social, The Old Electric and The Hive Café doing brilliant things to support and spotlight creative talent.

There’s also been a huge number of hospitality openings in recent years, with exceptional new eateries like Bailey’s Cheese & Charcuterie and Twisted Indian Street Food shaking up the restaurant scene. And the bars are following suit, with up-to-the-minute craft beer, adventurous cocktails and globetrotting wines becoming staples of the town’s bar menus.

Of course, to find all of this, you need to know where to look. And that’s where we come in. Whether you’re after attractions or galleries, restaurants or bars, we’ve got a best-of guide for you below. Take a pinch of this and a dash of that and build yourself an itinerary that guarantees a successful trip.
