Sound and Vision: Pop Stars on Film at HOME
Tom Grieve, Cinema EditorStars are stars, and throughout cinema history filmmakers – and studio bigwigs — have harnessed the magnetic power of musical performers on screen. Not every pop star’s magic translates of course, and there have been some car crashes along the way, but for every Cliff Richard there’s a Frank Sinatra. HOME’s Sound and Vision: Pop Stars on Film season aims to be a selected greatest hits, a visual jukebox that takes in the one offs, the powerhouse performances and the oddball curios. The season tracks the phenomenon from the old studio period when the likes of Elvis Presley had lucrative, brand-boosting parallel careers, through the heady counter-culture days of the ‘60s and ‘70s when a new breed of filmmakers teamed up with their musical contemporaries, to present day performers whose fame transcends media.
