Sir Walter Scott and Elizabeth Gaskell
Carmel Smickersgill, Tours & Activities EditorCelebrate the 250th anniversary of Sir Walter Scott’s birth with a special talk by Dr Diane Duffy. Scott was an incredibly popular poet, playwright and author of Ivanhoe, Waverley and Rob Roy. He created a Scottish literary identity, writing a huge number of novels and poems which remain classics to this day. Like Elizabeth Gaskell, he used native dialect and wrote about many of the complex social issues of the day. Today he is regarded by many as the father of the modern novel.
In this talk Dr. Duffy will explore the influence Scott’s work may have had on Elizabeth Gaskell’s.
