WHP24: Overmono at Depot Mayfield
Johnny James, Managing EditorThis October, powerhouse duo Overmono return to The Warehouse Project to curate a night featuring a huge line-up of electronic music pals at the top of their game.
Informed by their love of hard-edged ’90s rave, trance, and breakbeat, sibling duo Overmono are one of the most exciting acts on the UK’s electronic music scene right now. Raised in Wales, Tom and Ed Russell both had successful music careers before they began collaborating, with Tom known for his hard-edged techno as Truss and Ed for his rave-instilled bass work as Tessela.
Coming together as Overmono in 2015, their first mix of boundary-pushing electronica caught the ear of XL Recordings, who instantly signed them for a string of EPs that fused big room, trance-inspired arpeggiated riffs and dusty rave breaks, instilled with the feeling of early ’90s pirate radio stations.
Their emotional-drenched debut album Good Lies (2023) pushed them further into the limelight, where they’ve stayed while bringing the fire to clubs around the world, including delivering one of the most raved about Boiler Room sets from any UK act, right here in Manchester.
And it’s to Manchester the brothers return to play live, inviting a whole host of other brilliant acts along for the ride. Naturally, Overmono lead the charge on the main Depot stage, joined by two of the UK’s most revered selectors, Skream & Benga, plus special guest Sammy Virji, who’s firmly imprinted his happy-go-lucky sound into the UK bass and garage scenes over the past few years. The increasingly adventurous, ever-visionary Joy Orbison also joins, alongside Greater Manchester’s own UK garage luminary Interplanetary Criminal, making for a pretty huge line-up in just in one of the three rooms.
In the Concourse space, you can catch a b2b set from Ewan McVicar and Special Request, the former serving up big-hearted house and the latter an alter ego of the legendary Paul Woolford, inspired by breakbeat techno, drum ‘n’ bass, and underground dance music encountered on pirate radio stations. KI/KI, Ben UFO and Blawan also play in the Concourse, while over in the Archive room, Breakage will headline, joined by the likes of Blumitsu, Sam Gellaitry and RHR.
