Migration, Race and Empire: LGBT+ histories tour
Carmel Smickersgill, Tours & Activities EditorThe People’s History Museum welcomes you into their galleries and collection without having to leave the house, join the curators and guides for radical virtual tours. This month Prossy Kakooza and Jenny White will be exploring how Migration, Race and Empire have influenced and been influenced by LGBT+ history and contributed to the fight for LGBT+ rights.
British colonialism exported homophobia around the world
The tour looks at the experiences of black gender variant Victorians in Britain and how British colonialism exported homophobia around the world. Through their archive of artefacts and accounts these lived experiences come to life in an incredibly human way, rather than just being objects behind the exhibition glass.
Kakooza and White also discuss the issues faced by people seeking sanctuary in Britain on the basis of their sexuality and how the asylum system here affects their lives. They also look at ways in which racism is being challenged within LGBT+ culture in the UK.
The Migration, Race and Empire tour takes place via zoom and spaces can be booked via the People’s History Museum’s Eventbrite page. The event is free, however, during a time when Museums face financial hardships, the PHM is asking for donations as they operate as a charity.
