Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella at The Lowry
Kristy Stott, Theatre EditorWe’re thrilled that new Adventures and Matthew Bourne are returning to The Lowry this March with their much-anticipated version of Cinderella.
Cinderella is one of New Adventures’ most loved productions – a delightful and wonderfully evocative love story. Taking his inspiration from Prokofiev’s musical score and the original fairytale, Matthew Bourne plays with our expectations of the well-loved tale and adds further layers to the story, setting it in the heart of London during the Second World War.
Matthew Bourne’s interpretation of the classic fairy tale has, at its heart, a true war-time romance. A chance meeting results in a magical night for Cinderella and her dashing young RAF pilot, together just long enough to fall in love before being parted by the horrors of the Blitz.
Lez Brotherston’s sumptuous costumes and sets are always a highlight and compliment Bourne’s stunning choreography perfectly.
Perhaps most pleasingly, Cinderella will be performed in Surround Sound, designed by Paul Groothuis and will feature a specially commissioned recording played by a magnificent 60-piece orchestra.
Matthew Bourne’s vivid storytelling has never been more impressive and touching – taking the audience into the heart of Prokofiev’s magnificent score and propelling us to the sights and sounds of war-torn London. Giving us all the visual clues that we need to experience Cinderella in a new and refreshing way – there is no finer storyteller than Matthew Bourne. Get yourself a ticket and you will go to the ball.
