LGBTQ+ History Month 2025 at Showroom Cinema
Tom Grieve, Cinema EditorShowroom celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month with a eclectic, community-minded programme of film screenings, workshops and events designed to connect audiences this February. From Drag Bingo hosted by local sensation Emma Maezin (Wed 12 Feb), to screenings of queer touchstones such as Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-winning Moonlight (Fri 14 Feb) and Jamie Babbit’s candy-coloured conversion camp satire But I’m A Cheerleader (Thu 13 Feb), there’s a real mix on offer.
The season starts on Saturday 1 February with a 20th anniversary showing of Alice Wu’s Saving Face (a second Valentines screening is scheduled for Fri 14 Feb), a cult romantic comedy about a Chinese-American lesbian (Michelle Krusiec) and her traditionalist mother (Joan Chen), both of whom struggle with secret loves that clash against cultural expectations. There’s also an opportunity to catch up on the Best of Iris Prize, which brings award-winning LGBTQ+ short films from the UK, Australia and Palestine to Sheffield on Saturday 22 February.
the showpiece of the season is a week-long run for The People’s Joker (21-27 Feb), Vera Drew’s “revolutionary DIY parody film” that follows a closeted trans girl who moves to Gotham City to make it as a comedian
As far as we’re concerned, the showpiece of the season is a week-long run for The People’s Joker (21-27 Feb), Vera Drew’s “revolutionary DIY parody film” that follows a closeted trans girl who moves to Gotham City to make it as a comedian. We’re promised vats of feminizing chemical and psychedelic gender dysphoria as our heroine “Joker the Harlequin” unites with a team of rejects and misfits to fight Gotham’s fascist caped crusader.
Other events include an Emotional Wellbeing Workshop (Sun 9 Feb) designed to empower participants to experience greater joy and well-being though a creative session and a Family Time preview screening of Belgian/Dutch coming-of-age film Young Hearts (Sat 15 Feb) explores the first love between two teenage boys. Lastly, Showroom’s DocNights series continues on Monday 24 February with This is Ballroom, which finds the New York queer ballroom scene alive and thriving in contemporary Brazil.
