John Smith at Manchester Folk Festival
Chris Horkan
The opening concert of the inaugural Manchester Folk Festival features English guitarist and singer John Smith. Known for his acoustic fingerstyle and gravelly vocals, Smith has entertained audiences across the world – in festival tents, living rooms and concert halls alike.
During his decade-long, five-album career, Smith has performed alongside the likes of Jackson Browne, Richard Hawley and Jarvis Cocker, and opened bills for Iron and Wine and John Martyn. His latest record, Headlong, is dedicated to the memory of Smith’s friend and guitar hero John Renbourn (of Pentangle fame), who called him ‘the future of folk music’.
Joining Smith on this bill are two emerging talents in the folk world: singer/double-bassist Nina Harries and singer/accordionist Georgia Lewis.
