Schoenberg’s retelling of an old Danish legend simply roars. One of the most spectacular works ever written, Gurrelieder is scored for a colossal orchestral and choral ensemble – so vast, in fact, that tonight sees the BBC Philharmonic join forces with the Hallé in order to do it justice. Bringing our 2016-17 season to a close, this very special concert celebrates the 70th birthday of its conductor – Sir Mark Elder, music director of the Hallé and one of British music’s most treasured figures.
