A brand new exhibition at Open Eye Gallery presents three photography projects from African artists, examining the multitude of ways in which local communities across Africa are responding to the challenges of the climate crisis.
Presented across three gallery spaces, the display includes artists Etinossa Yvonne, The Slum Studio and Dillon Marsh. Each of the artists focuses on a different aspect of the resilience apparent in their respective locations: Yvonne addresses water shortages through male water carriers in Nigeria, a role traditionally associated with women; Marsh focuses on the habit around Rwenzori Mountains along the border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is at risk due to the threat of glacial melting; and The Slum Studio emphasises both the scale of the problem of clothes waste apparent in Ghana, as well as offering ingenious processes of turning rubbish into fashion. The show encourages an exchange of ideas via the medium of photography, in how we can prepare for the challenges of the changing climate.
