Felicity Aylieff: Expressions of Blue at Yorkshire Sculpture Park
Maja Lorkowska, Exhibitions Editor
Have you ever seen a human-sized ceramic pot? Now’s your chance to experience a whole forest of them, thanks to a new exhibition of works at YSP – Felicity Aylieff: Expressions of Blue.
The renowned ceramicist Felicity Aylieff has created a whole body of works that consists of truly monumental sculptures (thrown by hand!), measuring up to five metres high. They’re glazed in elegant blue and white hues, painted in bold abstract brushstrokes. The colour combination brings to mind traditional Chinese porcelain and the artist has indeed worked in China, collaborating with expert craftspeople in Jingdezhen over the last 20 years.
Along with these genre-defying works, visitors will be able to see photographs of Aylieff’s process as well as her tools, such as giant horsehair brushes used to create the decorative abstract patterns on the vessels.
