An extraordinary true story of kindness and community, the multi-award-winning stage sensation – Come From Away – lands at The Lowry for a four-week run this Christmas.

Come From Away tells the incredible real-life story of almost 7000 air passengers, from all over the world, who were grounded in Canada during the wake of 9/11, and the small, kind-hearted community who invited them into their lives.

With a soaring musical score, Come From Away is the ultimate feel-good production based on the true events of 2001 – when all air traffic was diverted from US skies and 38 planes were forced to ground at Gander Airport, Newfoundland for five days. While the passengers were trapped onboard, the Newfoundlanders converted their schools, churches and community buildings into temporary accommodations for the bewildered travellers.

Taking a contemporary spin on the ancient theatrical concept of a chorus, this well-crafted musical is built around an ensemble performance – a group of ordinary people commenting on a series of events. Offering a unique insight into different people’s real-life perspectives during a major moment in time, the show shines a light on the experiences of the first female American Airlines captain, the quick-thinking town mayor, the mother of a New York firefighter and an eager local news reporter.

Loved by audiences and theatre critics alike, this triumphant smash-hit musical has won four Olivier Awards including Best Musical in London, and the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical on Broadway.

Of the show, Steve Cowton, Head of Theatres at Lowry, told us,“We are thrilled to be presenting this brilliant feel-good musical this festive season. Come From Away has been a huge hit all over the World and we can’t wait to share it with our audiences.”

With a run time of 1 hour 50 minutes (no interval) and recommended for ages 10+, Come From Away offers a different type of theatre experience for families this Christmas – a warm reminder of hope, unity and the power of the human spirit when we need it the most.
