Come and Sing the Requiems by Fauré and Sir John Rutter
Carmel Smickersgill, Tours & Activities EditorSinging is socialising with a purpose to make something beautiful. This is why it’s so powerful and why so many people flock to it, particularly in uncertain times. Singing en masse with a large group of people is one of those feelings that can’t be replicated any other way. Whether it’s in the middle of a football crowd, at the drop of a banger in a late night DJ set or within a community or religious setting we’re often chasing the dragon of this unique feeling of connection. St. Peter’s Singers are hosting an event in the breathtaking setting of Leeds Cathedral where everyone and anyone is welcome to come and sing the requiems of Gabriel Fauré and Sir John Rutter.
All you have to do is, as they put it, ‘sign up and turn up’. You can find incredibly helpful links on the website that will help you learn the music in advance if you want to turn up prepared. Scores will be provided on the day but keen singers with their own copies are welcome to bring them. The rehearsal will start at 1:30pm with refreshments provided for all singers.
Behind the helm of this choral voyage is musical director Alexander Woodrow with Shaun Turnbull playing the accompaniment on the Leeds Minster’s famous Harrison & Harrison organ. You can expect a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere where everyone is primarily there to have fun and enjoy singing together as well as bringing two iconic pieces of choral repertoire to life.
At the end of Come and Sing there will be a concert of the two works where an audience of friends and family are welcome to come see the choir in its full imperfect glory. They’ll have plenty of time throughout the afternoon for socialising and meeting like minded singing enthusiasts. These days can sometimes result in offshoot groups of keen musicians who manage to forge their own amateur groups.
