Changing Places at Quarry Bank
Sara Jaspan, Exhibitions EditorFilm and Video Umbrella’s nationally touring exhibition of moving-image works by contemporary artists is taking over Quarry Bank’s historic cotton mill. Organised to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Indian independence, Changing Places explores parallels between the transformations that took place in England and across South Asia as a result of industrialisation, and how the model of industrial production forged in Britain has been exported to other parts of the globe.
Each presentation of Changing Places has been sited in venues that embody Britain’s imperial industrial heritage, and consisted exclusively of work by artists who are either from, or retain a connection to, Bangladesh, India or Pakistan. Changing Places forms part of Arts and Wonder – Quarry Bank’s new season of visual art, film and music, exploring work, leisure and the legacy of industrialisation through contemporary art.
