9 September — 5 November 2017 Entrance is free

Our C-Art Festival 2017 top picks may have mainly focused upon performance so far. But of course, one of the key highlights of the 10-day line-up is the hugely popular C-Art Cumbrian Artist of the Year exhibition, which is fast becoming a benchmark for aspiring Cumbrian artists.

The carefully curated show features a rigorous selection of works by contemporary artists living, working or from the region; last year drawing over 22,000 visitors. This year looks set to be even more exciting, judging by the diversity and ambition of the 36 artists whose work will be exhibited. Visitors can look forward to an eclectic mix of artworks ranging across all media, from traditional painting and sculpture to contemporary video installation and photography.

But it’s not just the work that makes the C-Art Cumbrian Artist of the Year exhibition exciting. It’s also the innovative selection process. The display is shaped by the values and opinions of C-Art’s team of six young curators, all aged between 16-24 years, who have made their final artist selection under the guidance of curators from CCA in Glasgow and Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool.

The overall winner of the Cumbrian Artist of the Year Award will be announced on the preview night of the exhibition. Previous winners include Karen Babayan and Sarah Tew.
