Body and Earth: an exhibition by Antonia Peña at Instituto Cervantes
Maja Lorkowska, Exhibitions Editor
Photographer Antonia Peña continues the tradition of artists exploring the intrinsic connection between humans and the natural environment with a new display of work – come along to see Body and Earth at Instituto Cervantes.
Visually, Peña’s models are often women and many of the final images are inspired by her own experience. As a photographer of people, she has the unique gift of being able to draw out and capture transient moments of vulnerability and beauty in the process of creating her images, which makes for a thoroughly engaging display at the cultural centre.
Peña is best known for her sensual aesthetic and dynamic compositions, with images often featuring nude models outdoors, or in more intimate, domestic surroundings. Her work is influenced by cultural references gathered in daily life and focusing on the most vulnerable yet resilient elements of the human condition.
In a similar vein to artists before her, like Francesca Woodman and Ana Mendieta, Peña sees the body as an extension of our surroundings, or perhaps a form that can seamlessly blend with its surroundings because that’s where it really belongs. Her artist statement mentions that the body also “transcends mere physicality (…) and symbolises the beauty of the human spirit—a reflection of our innate need to be free.”
The artist combines her love of the sea and mountains with a desire to challenge social norms through which the female body is often viewed: here nudity is used as a tool of empowerment and self-compassion.
Antonia Peña is from Galicia, Spain and currently based in London. Her work has been exhibited worldwide and won multiple awards, including the prestigious ‘Portrait of Britain Award’ in 2022.
