Bat Walk at Temple Newsam
Carmel Smickersgill, Tours & Activities EditorYou may be familiar with the farmyard inhabitants of Temple Newsam; the goats, pigs and chickens are regularly visited over the summer. However, have you ever thought to seek out the park’s less visible inhabitants? As well as being home to the domesticated animals, there is a huge amount of wild fauna supported in this green enclave of Leeds. Join expert guides for a Bat Walk where you’ll go looking for some very cute flying wildlife.
The tour will start in the courtyard, just as the light enters that mid point between day and night. It begins with a demonstration of how to use a bat detector as well as an overview of these peculiar animals’ lives. You’ll learn how to spot the difference between multiple species of bat as well as understanding their feeding and roosting patterns. (We didn’t even know bats roosted.)
After enjoying some tea and biscuits alongside the informative talk, you’ll set out on an approximately two-mile walk. The terrain is mostly tarmac paths, but comfortable footwear is advised. The walk finishes back at the main house where you can see the trees and fields sprawling down the hill behind you.
Temple Newsam are keen to be as accommodating as possible, so people with any accessibility concerns are encouraged to get in contact before booking. Anyone attending with small children who may wish to leave earlier, are also advised that it’s a relaxed walk so do whatever feels most comfortable for you. Booking in advance is essential and can be done through the link below.
Throughout the year, the house, farm and park hosts a massive array of events; from large scale runs to intimate spooky house tours, there’s plenty to do. Check out the website for further details of Bat Walks and much more.
