A Nightmare on Nelson Street 2 – Emmeline’s Revenge
Carmel Smickersgill, Tours & Activities EditorWho knew cult horror franchises and 20th Century feminism would make such a potent combo. The Pankhurst Museum proved this to be the case with their halloween themed antics last year. Now they return with that age-old horror trope, a sequel. Join them this year for A Nightmare on Nelson Street 2: Emmeline’s Revenge. Starting with a walking tour of the haunted sites in the area you’ll end up back at the Pankhurst Museum for hot drinks and spooky tales of suffrage.
62 Nelson Street is famously where the suffrage movement was founded whilst it was the Pankhurst family home. However, it sits in an area of Manchester which has undergone several waves of development since that time. Local landmarks like Manchester Royal Infirmary and the University have many macabre tales attached to them. Expect to be chilled by tales of body snatching, terrified by accounts of disorderly houses and just plain baffled by the intriguing link between the suffragettes and werewolves.
The tour is led by Hannah Priest, the Engagement Officer at the Pankhurst Museum. Let her passion and love of Emmaline’s legacy carry you into the night. You can be sure to discover little known facts and fascinating truths about the area, whether you’re just visiting or have lived there your whole life.
Ghoulish glad rags are encouraged for the occasion, however, it will be a typical autumnal evening so dressing for the cold (and maybe wet) is also a good idea. The event is for over 18s and would be described as spooky rather than scary so don’t be put off if, like this particular writer, you are a bit of a wimp.
A Nightmare on Nelson Street 2 lasts around two hours and will conclude with a hot beverage and further spooky tales. It’s a great way to engage in sober Halloween haunted activities, meet like minded feminists and connect with history along the way.
