Roger Stephenson founded Manchester-based stephenson STUDIO in 1979. Since the studio’s inception the practice has been awarded over 40 national awards for buildings it has designed, and was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize in 1998 for Quay Bar, Castlefield, and again in 2013 for the Chetham’s School of Music development. Stephenson STUDIO has received acclaim for the way it has dealt with new uses in terms of the historical context found in most British cities. In recognition of his services to architecture, Stephenson was appointed an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List of 2001.

40 Years | 40 Projects: the work of stephenson STUDIO at Castlefield Gallery marks 40 years of the stephenson STUDIO, presenting 40 of the Practice’s most striking projects, including highlights such as the new building for the Halle in Ancoats, the Stoller Concert Hall, Manchester Central and the Convention Centre. The exhibition will also reveal something about Roger’s wider creative endeavors including painting, drawing and jewelry making.
