Under health and safety laws, before a shop can sell an electrical item it has to be tested by a qualified electrician, which is why most charity shops no longer sell them. Thankfully, though, some charitable organisations have set up specialist retail outlets with trained electricians on site, specialising in the sale of both secondhand electrical appliances and furniture.

The British Heart Foundation can now claim to be the biggest second-hand furniture and electrical retailer in the UK with over 140 dedicated stores. This branch in Sale is big, bright and packed full of all manner of household goods. And while the furniture tends to err mostly on the side of contemporary suburban (leading one to suspect that the BHF sells its choice vintage items elsewhere) it can’t be faulted on its stock of fridges, washing machines, TVs, radios, CD and DVD players and the like.
