Booths Media City

Susie Stubbs

Set up in the 1850s and run by five successive generations of the Booth family, this Northern supermarket chain is about as far from Tesco as it’s possible to get (it even gives Waitrose a run for its organic money). Booths Media City is aptly sited, and no doubt appreciated by the TV, radio and media executives who work in the area, but it’s worth popping in even if you’re just out and about at The Quays for the day.

The supermarket works with its own suppliers, creating a range of own-brand products that include Wensleydale cheese, Morecambe Bay potted shrimps, whey cream butter and much more besides. There is also an excellent range of local beers and wines, and it even has a section dedicated to “forgotten foods”, traditional food items such as damson jelly and York ham that, championed by partner the Slow Food movement, are otherwise at risk of falling off our menus forever, as the skills to make them die out.
