Bentley’s Fish and Chip Shop

Tucked away on Blackpool’s South Shore, Bentley’s has been serving up some of the town’s best fish and chips for years.

This traditional, family-run chippy has long been loved by locals, who, since the place opened in 2012, have cited it among the town’s best spots for quality fish and chips. This is backed up by a stacked award cabinet, with the shop winning Trip Adviser Excellence awards for five years running and – more importantly – the much-coveted Good Food Award’s Chippy of the Year award on several occasions, including in 2024/25. So, why is it held in such high esteem, in a town absolutely packed with chippies?

According to the Good Food Award themselves, it comes down to a three pronged attack of food quality, service and value. The menu offers nothing particularly flashy; it’s all about perfectly-executed classics – fresh, flaky fish coated in featherlight batter, and crispy golden chips that burst into fluffy little clouds. The Yorkshire fishcake is also raved about, as are a few rare sighting on chippy menus – including haggis and black pudding – and that chippy holy grail: scraps (not actually on the menu, but if you know you know).

All are priced very well, with small, medium and large portions available – though even the ‘small’ haddock and chips will have you loosening your belt buckle a notch. For those with a gluten intolerance, you’re catered for here, with gluten free fish and chips available. There’s also a special children’s menu on offer. If, as is often the case, your kids will only eat fish when its finger shaped, they’ll not be missing out. And if they’ve been really good, there’s even a slushy machine.

It’s a family-run place, and you’ll feel that in the service, as well as the atmosphere in the restaurant, with its chequered tablecloths and framed photographs of Blackpool’s historic attractions. Though if you’d prefer to scoot off to the beach, wooden fork in hand, you’re only a stone’s throw away.

There may be plenty more fish in the sea when it comes to chippies Blackpool, but Bentley’s is a fine catch.
