Kristy Stott, Theatre EditorPlacing visitors and community at the heart of all their work, Aviva Studios, home of Factory International, are set to host an accessible and inclusive programme of events this winter.
Throughout December, you’ll find comedy nights and cabaret, poetry slams and live music happening in the riverside cultural hub – and the best thing is, all activity is free.
On 4 December, a groundbreaking disabled-led comedy night takes over Aviva Studios’ Social. Hosted by Wheels and the Legman, Crippled with Laughter aims to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes through comedy. Prepare to experience Jibreel Arshad, Goz Ugo, Connor Mac, Rheanon Lee and Alex Mitchell as they bring their unique perspectives to the stage.
Next up, on 5 December, join leading dance creatives choreographer Joe Powell-Main and dancer-performer Natalie Amber for Changing the Narrative, an in-depth discussion on disabled representation in dance and classical ballet.
Lovers of performance and spoken word should head down to Poetry Place’s third birthday Poetry Slam on 7 December. Hosted by Griot Gabriel and headlined by the sensational P.A.Bitez, you can expect to hear from 10 expertly selected poets as they compete for the Poetry Place Slam Title.
Prepare for an electrifying night of circus, dance and magic when the Beyond Boundaries Cabaret takes over Aviva Studios on 14 December. Be entertained by three legendary international artists – magician Adam B, juggler Louise and dancer Miss Lolly May – who are all disabled and/or neurodivergent.
Finally, on 18 December, Factory Spotlight comes to town with a night of Manchester soul curated by inner. Expect performances from acoustic storyteller Naomi Kalu, Secret Night Gang vocalist Kemani Anderson, new soul trio The Divines and spoken word artist 2b.Frank. With a warm-up set by DJ Lenny and a closing mix from Channell, you can expect a fine-tuned night of soul.
And if all of this sounds like thirsty work, be sure to pop by Aviva Studios’ Cafe and Bar, you’ll find pints from £4.50 and hot drinks from £1.50 – you could even treat yourself to a slice of pizza.
